The national average April temperature was 1.1 °C below the 1991-2020 norm. The last time April 2021 was colder was 1.8 °C below the norm, April 2008 was 1.6 °C below the norm, and April 2001 was 2.5 °C below the 1991-2020 norm. All other April months since 2001 were milder on average nationwide than the current one.
At some measuring locations, April 2023 was similarly cold or slightly colder than April 2021, such as in Neuchâtel or on the Chaumont. In Sion, at 1.4 °C below normal, it was the coldest April since 2001.
April 2023 remained only slightly below the norm at measuring sites in high alpine valleys, such as Andermatt, Samedan and Segl-Maria. The April months of 2021 and 2001 were massively colder here, with more than 2 °C below the 1991-2020 norm.
In the low-lying areas of the southern side of the Alps, the April temperature was within the range of the 1991–2020 norm.
April 2023 is the first month in six months with below-average temperatures nationwide compared to the 1991-2020 norm. The last time temperatures were slightly below average was September 2022.

Persistently cool in the north
April was predominantly dominated by low pressure and extremely changeable weather conditions. The daily average temperature north of the Alps and in the Alps was mostly more than 1.5 °C below the 1991-2020 norm until April 26. Periodically, the values even dropped 3 to 5 °C, and in mountainous areas on individual days even 6 to 8 °C below the norm.
