Behind yesterday’s cold front, the upper air flow over the Alps turned to the northwest. This meant that the moist and quite cool Atlantic air was increasingly! trapped on the hills and mountain ranges! In the upper layers of the atmosphere, cold air reached us on the edge of a strong jet stream! which unstable the air again.

Mostly sunny in the south
The “sunny side of Switzerland” lived up to its name again today. Protected by the Alpine ridge and with a northerly wind blowing, there were significantly more hours of sunshine south of the Alps. – But it was not completely cloudless: especially in the first half of the day, the northerly wind was not able to really prevail and, contrary to expectations, a few showers made their way towards central and southern Ticino.
