Persistent weather situation, but today with small differences

The surface pressure field continues to be dominated by the large-scale high pressure area centered on the British Isles. As in
yesterday’s blog
As described above, the bise brings dry air to the northern side of the Alps. In the Alps and on the southern side of the Alps there is a moister air mass.

The high pressure area cannot be seen in the altitude field. The map above shows the geopotential height (black lines), the wind (plumes) and the temperature (coloured areas, the more intense the violet, the colder) at 500 hPa, which corresponds to a height of approximately 5.7 km above sea level. There is a low pressure area above the Gulf of Lions (solid black line), and a trough to the north-east of Switzerland (cyclonically curved black line). Both disturbances are bringing cold air at high altitudes and are approaching Switzerland today. The instability has increased somewhat compared to the past few days.

morning convection

The webcam at the Hagenturm on the Randen captured two showers heading southeast this morning. An unusual sight, as the last few days have mostly been cloudless in the morning.

On the southern side of the Alps, it was commonplace these days for there to be showers in the morning. For us in the north, this so-called “morning convection” was an exception today. From Schaffhausen to Freiamt and over the southern end of Lake Neuchâtel, individual showers “popped up” in the morning. These brought brief, local rain before collapsing again. Due to the low wind conditions at all altitudes, the cells hardly shifted.

This morning convection calmed down during the morning. At your pop-up should be informal and friendly the same time, however, cumulus clouds began to form, especially over the mountains. Thunderstorms began over the Jura before midday, and then also in the foothills and Alps. Due to a lack of flow, the cells remained mostly stationary, so that larger amounts of precipitation accumulated in some places.

Today can be summarized meteorologically as follows: awb directory Morning convection followed by
daily weather
, which was favored by the disturbances at altitude.
