The high pressure area cannot be seen in the altitude field. The map above shows the geopotential height (black lines), the wind (plumes) and the temperature (coloured areas, the more intense the violet, the colder) at 500 hPa, which corresponds to a height of approximately 5.7 km above sea level. There is a low pressure area above the Gulf of Lions (solid black line), and a trough to the north-east of Switzerland (cyclonically curved black line). Both disturbances are bringing cold air at high altitudes and are approaching Switzerland today. The instability has increased somewhat compared to the past few days.

On the southern side of the Alps, it was commonplace these days for there to be showers in the morning. For us in the north, this so-called “morning convection” was an exception today. From Schaffhausen to Freiamt and over the southern end of Lake Neuchâtel, individual showers “popped up” in the morning. These brought brief, local rain before collapsing again. Due to the low wind conditions at all altitudes, the cells hardly shifted.
